Written sources on the role of women in history are scarce. However, it is known that women emerged as protagonists at the end of the Nasrid kingdom in Spain. Such is the case of Isabel de Solis, who was taken as a prisioner and transferred to the Court of Nasrid ruler of the Emirate of Granada, Abu l-Hasan Ali. The obsession of the emir for Isabel became soon apparent, causing suspicion in the rest of slave concubines, especially in Aixa—his legitimate wife. Not only he married to his new young lover, but he also gave in to all his desires, filling her with gifts, to finally lived together in the Tower of Comares, away from the rest of the royal family. Sources claim that Zoraya—Isabel's given name when converted to Islam—intended to place her sons first in the line of succession to the throne, ahead of its legitimate heir, Boabdil. Such was the emir's over-accomodating attitude with his ambitious wife that he bequeathed his assets and kingdom properties to her, and provoking the exile of his first spouse, Aixa. In the end, Zoraya survived the Christian Conquest, although she and her children had to convert to Christianity.

Seville, Cordoba, and Granada have been a great source of inspiration for an endless number of travelers attracted not only to their fascinating history, but also to their vibrant contrasts of lights and colors, attractive landscapes, and curious characters.

In this broad, diverse Andalousian scene, many artists gave free rein to their creative imagination. For instance, the Catalonian painter Mariano Fortuny found inspiration in Andalusia—and more specifically in Granada—a place which provided the author with plenty of renewed artistic impetus, as he was usually seen as a costumbrista painter (of mainly romantic and folkloric paintings). After years of artistic stagnation, this innovative landscape came a like a breath of fresh air, undeliberately setting the basis for the artistic panorama of the 20th century. What better way to commemorate the Dia de Andalucia (Andalusia Day) than admiring Fortuny's drawings and engravings?. The exhibition will be open at the Museum of Fine Arts of the Alhambra until March 26th.

The 'zambra'—a tradional flamenco dance typical from Granada—has its roots in old Moorish bridal parties. As described in sources from 16th century, they were full of an intimate familiar atmosphere that still remains at present day—despite enjoying a worldwide fame thanks to relevant figures such as Federico García Lorca or Manuel de Falla.

The exhibition 'Colita Flamenco. El Viaje Sin fin' unfolds a masterly examination of flamenco throughout 80 photographs taken by Catalonian artist Isabel Steva aka 'Colita'. This exhibition will be open until May 6th.
