Find out with us

Álvaro Siza Vieira, born in 1933 in Matosinhos in Portugal, is one of the most important figures who has carried out national and international projects  in architecture today. He has been honored with prestigious awards including the Pritzker, the Golden Medal of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, and the Prize for Contemporary Architecture of the European Union.

Under the premise "architects do not invent anything, just transform reality", Siza creates his own philosophy which is reflected in his writings and in his architectural works. His eclectic style combines elements from rationalist and organicist currents, synthesizing tradition and modernity through their performances.

Through the traveling exhibition "Álvaro Siza Vieira. Visions of the Alhambra ", the Patronato de la Alhambra and Generalife with the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin, invite us to discover the architectural design of the new access and visitor center of the monument. This new access is designed by the Portuguese architect and Granada-born architect Juan Domingo Santos. Do not miss it!

Did know you that..?

The astrolabe is an instrument crucial to astrologers and astronomers for finding the positions of celestial bodies. Etymologically derived from the Greek word, ἀστρολάβιον, meaning "star finder".

The origin of the astrolabe is rooted in the Ancient and Classical periods, followed by some changes made by the Greeks – through the studies of Ptolemy and Hypatia of Alexandria – and the Hindu throughout the Middle ages. In the 9th century, a large Islamic scientific development spread across the Western civilization by the dissemination of Arabic texts from al-Andalus. In the 13th century, Alfonso X of Castile studied all these texts and came out with the astronomical tables or the alfonsine tables.

Unlike the classic planispheric astrolabe, the spherical astrolabe of al-Andalus consists of a graduated circle divided by the horizon into two hemispheres: the internal (tympans) are fixed plates with coordinates of the celestial sphere corresponding to a particular latitude plate; and the external (rete or mobile openwork plaque) is rotatable and indicates the position of the Sun and Moon. Rotating around its own axis, there is a needle which points to the star previously chosen. It was used by Muslims for navigation and as a way of finding the direction of Mecca.
