The paintings in Sala de los Reyes and the houses of Partal at the Alhambra brought us the idea of how people dressed during the Nasrid period of Spain. The fabrics and the colours red and green became significant and defined the social status in society. As for woman’s fashion, the main characteristics were elegance and the use of accessories including the sarbil or leather sandals, and the jalajil or ankle bracelets.

It was such a rich and superb fashion that it ended up influencing their Christian neighbours, and even some of the travellers who came from the East.

The caliph Abd ar-Rahman II founded the tailoring workshop–or Dar al-Tirāz–where local workers were considered to be one the most exclusive craftsmen in Al-Andalus. They would make special costumes of Eastern inspiration with brocade patterns and gemstones. The inscriptions in luxury garments were made of gold embroidery, and they were only destined to be worn by the upper classes for celebrations or special events. Similarly, these costumes were also given as extra special presents at the time.

Tiendas de la Alhambra is particularly inspired by the luxury and exquisiteness typical of Al-Andalus. Our bags are designed to meet the high expectations of our many customers–making them the perfect choice for yourself, or to give as a gift.

Did you know...?

During the 15th century, the Christian influence brought about a new piece of clothing: the marlota, i.e. a robe made of dyed fabric in either red, green, blue or golden colour embroidered with fine decorations.

A clear example of this Christian influence and decorative richness in clothing is the Boabdil’s red linen marlota. It was also decorated with silk thread, metallics and others. In the battle of Lucena in 1483, it was used as the spoils of war–or war booty–by its captors. Today, it is displayed at the Museum of the Army in Toledo.
