From the earliest days of photography in the 19th century, the Alhambra has since been an inspiration for artists from all over the world. The oldest photographs of the Alhambra, and Patio de los Leones specifically, have generated huge interest among travellers, scholars, and artists while touring Spain. Also, tourists were fascinated with postcards, brochures, travel books, and photographic albums from that time.

The first known images of the Alhambra are considered a unique and incomparable piece of artwork, which have been reinterpreted into engravings and lithographs. Those old images of the Alhambra are of extremely historic value, as they captured not only the great sensitivity and admiration for the monument in terms of society, but also the magnificence of its ruins and the exotic aura of a majestic past time.

Kalilah wa Dimnah—a collection of illustrated storybooks—is one of the most popular works in Eastern literature, and also a required reading in schools across Arab countries. The book is a fairly faithful rendition of the famous Panchatantra: a series of fables or moral stories aimed at the instruction of young people.

Persian translator, Ibn al-Muqqafa, recovered the ancient tales by translating into Arabic. During the Al-Andalus era, the Arabic version came into the hands of Alphonse X, who translated into Castillian as Calila y Dimma. Fables and storybooks are a great way to expose children and youth to the classics of Arabic literature.

Ibn al-Khatib likened the Alhambra’s beautiful Moorish architecture to “a bride dressed in robes with the smell of myrtle, the pavilion is the crown, and before me is the mirror, a pool”. The blending of elements—architecture/water, pavilion/pool—can be found at its finest in the Alhambra. In fact, these elements are the main “ingredients” of an Islamic garden, where the architecture itself is very telling about the afterlife. This scenario draws the visitor into an idyllic setting to finally emerge back in a spiritual, physical and sensorial world of Islamic history.
