Al-Hakam II was responsible for the creation of an important library in Cordoba which contributed to the dissemination of texts dealing with different areas of knowledge. Due to this and other cultural factors, Cordoba entered into an era of great scientific development and splendor during the Middle Ages. The rich legacy of Eastern cultures, the study of Greek sources, and the arrival of the world's revered sages from different disciplines led to an explosion of scientific research, which laid the foundations for Europe's Renaissance. The popularization of science will be the theme at this year's 35th edition Granada Book Fair. It will run from 22th April - 1st May. As happens every year, Tiendas de la Alhambra could not miss this event where our customers can find specific bibliography about one of most brilliant periods of our history.

In the Al-Andalus, the tremendous development of science promoted the study of astronomy along with the enhancement of navigational instruments such as the astrolabe or the compass. Their use widespread among Islam, and even conquered territories beyond its borders. Until the 19th century, these instruments became vital for European astrologers and astronomers. Tiendas de la Alhambra offer a number of items inspired by those Eastern prototypes which indicated the exact time of the day, located celestial objects, determined the local latitude, and calculated a horoscope.

Did you know...?

Muhammad I invented the minkan or candle clock, which was described for the first by Ibn al-Khatib in his work NUfada III. In this text, Ibn al-Khatib talks about a polychrome device which shows the exact time of the day during the mawlid in December, 1362. To explain the minkan´s mechanism, al-Khatib wrote: "Each hour, a little stone drops in a small plate producing a sound. Then, a taqa (small niche) opens up...inside there was a small paper with a poem". The period of Al-andalus enhanced this techniques of creating ingenious automata or mechanical machines which fascinated the upper class of Granada.
