During his stay in Granada, Charles V and Isabella of Portugal were really enchanted by Granada's gastronomy. The monarchs never missed a meal prepared by their servants—normally a taste of the local delicacies of the region. It is well known that the emperor did not skimp on food, so that Henry Stercke —the King's head chef— could bring him not only the best dishes, but also vast quantities of wine or beer; the latter was one of Charles V's greatest pleasures. Even though he rarely ate in front of other people, it is believed that imperial dinners followed a strict court ceremonial of burgundian style where servants could not ignore one single detail: wash the diner's hands, or clean any of the crumbs in the King's beard that might have been left over from the desserts. Different sources point to the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra as one of the King's favorite places to eat because of its exoticism and sumptuous beauty.

Perfume played an important role in the Al-Andalus, not only in the religious sphere, but also in public and domestic enviroments of those days. The balsamic essences naturally formed part of celebrations and large events. Some examples are the relaxing scents of rose, lemon, amber, musk, jasmine... The variety of ointments used in arab baths or hammans contained many of them. Tiendas de la Alhamabra are inspired by the expert perfumers of Al-Andalus to create exclusive hand lotions, scented soap, and aromatic sachet bags.

Did you know...?

The present-day descendants of Aixa Abn Muhammad, daughter of Morayma and Muhammad XII of Granada, live in Mexico. When Muhammad was forced to leave Granada after its conquest, the royal entourage and his family followed him, except for his daughter, Aixa. Aixa's decision to stay in Granada has not been clarified yet. While Aixa had been used to living more in a castillian lifestyle despite her captivity —she remained a prisoner in the King´s court— some sources claim that Aixa once was King Ferdinand's lover. From this union, Miguel Fernandez Caballero of Granada was born. Miguel was an illegitimate son of King Ferdinand who was raised by the marquis of Priego, and separated from the royal family until he was appointed Prince of the New Kingdom of Granada, an area corresponding mainly to modern-day Colombia. Miguel held important positions in America, France, and Italy. After that, he came back to Cordova in Spain, where he died aged 80. At our shops, you will find books on influential figures of the last days of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
